Charles Dickens may be credited with inventing the Christmas story but, judging by the surge in popularity of the Christmas themed novel today, I’d say this generation of authors perfected it. The genre of Christmas themed storytelling includes everything from romance, mystery, and women’s fiction.
Mirroring the recent rise of Hallmark Christmas movies, the Christmas novel has captured the imagination of readers and writers alike with both groups looking to break from their regular literary endeavours, albeit temporarily, to explore the upbeat and hope-filled tales the Christmas novel is known for.
Authors of all stripes have joined the Christmas novel bandwagon including Richard Paul Evans, Debbie Macomber, David Baldacci, Janet Evanovich, Anne Perry, and John Grisham, each providing their own take on the perfect Christmas story.
And readers can’t seem to get enough.
Each fall publishers send forth countless new additions to the Christmas genre; books which I have no doubt were written in the heat-stricken months of July & August with nary a peppermint stick or Christmas wreath in sight. Nevertheless, after months, nay years of painstaking edits, rewrites, formatting and promotion, the books finally hit the shelves at book stores and public libraries, ready to provide some escapism and entertainment throughout the Christmas season.
