For the first time, libraries across Simcoe County are participating in a reading event called Simcoe Reads. This community-based program follows the CBC Canada Reads event format held each year in Toronto. The difference, of course, is that the final debate will be held digitally. The five participating libraries have selected a champion who has chosen a book they will defend during the debate. Each library is encouraging its patrons to read each novel and see for themselves why each title was selected.
The five libraries competing are Essa Public Library, Barrie Public Library, Midland Public Library, Innisfil IdeaLab and Library, and Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library. The digital debate will be held on September 26th with each library champion defending their chosen book. Community members can join in on the book debate digitally as it unfolds and find out who the winner is.
Essa Public Library’s champion, Emily Wood, recently sat down with EPL staff over Zoom to share her insights and excitement for the upcoming program. Emily is an avid reader and writer and poised to put out her first novel. She studied Communications at the University of Ottawa and later earned a diploma in Print & Broadcast Journalism at Durham College, and currently works as a Marketing & Communications professional for a charitable foundation. Her interview, shared on the Essa Public Library’s YouTube Channel, can be viewed below:
The book Emily has chosen is the 2018 novel The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Canadian author Craig Davidson. The following is a summary of the book:
Growing up in 1980s Niagara Falls--a seedy but magical, slightly haunted place--Jake Baker spends most of his time with his uncle Calvin, a kind but eccentric enthusiast of occult artifacts and conspiracy theories. The summer Jake turns twelve, he befriends a pair of siblings new to town, and so Calvin decides to initiate them all into the "Saturday Night Ghost Club." But as the summer goes on, what begins as a seemingly lighthearted project may ultimately uncover more than any of its members had imagined. With the alternating warmth and sadness of the best coming-of-age stories, The Saturday Night Ghost Club examines the haunting mutability of memory and storytelling, as well as the experiences that form the people we become.
As part of this program, the authors of the books chosen will be visiting each community digitally for an author talk. Essa Public Library's champion Emily and author Craig Davidson will be available on August 20th through Zoom at 7:00 PM. Each participating library is offering an author talk and dates will be posted on the Essa Public Library’s website as they come available.
So are you up for it? Five libraries. Five books. 1 winner! The Essa Public Library has several copies in a variety of formats of all of the Simcoe Reads 2020 selections available. To get a copy, place a hold online or call either branch and staff can assist you.
